PART 3: The Call from the Border
I ran out of the school building, my chest burning as I got into my car and dialed the private investigator who had assisted the search-and-rescue team.
“Where is my husband right now?” I demanded, my voice cracking.
“He just checked through customs at the regional airport, ma’am,” the investigator replied softly. “He boarded a private charter flight forty minutes ago.”
“He didn’t kill Owen,” I whispered, holding my son’s letter against my chest as tears streamed down my face. “He staged the accident. He stowed him away.”
Owen’s letter had included a specific detail at the very bottom: a phone number written in faint pencil, accompanied by a note: “This is the caretaker’s cabin near the south ridge of the lake estate. He told me to wait there until his associate comes with the fake passport.”
I didn’t call my husband. I called the State Police Major Crimes Unit and gave them the exact GPS coordinates written in my son’s handwriting.
How did the police find Owen? Continue reading Part 4 below for the showdown.
PART 4: The Cabin on the Ridge
Four tactical units and two K-9 teams descended on the remote forestry cabin near the south ridge within thirty minutes.
I sat in the back of a state police cruiser at the perimeter, my heart beating so loudly it drowned out the crackle of the police radios.
At 4:15 PM, the radio clicked open: “Target secured. Repeat, minor located inside the structure. He is unharmed.”
I burst out of the cruiser before the doors were fully open.
There, stepping off the cabin porch wrapped in a heavy thermal blanket, was Owen. He was pale and exhausted, but he was alive. The moment his eyes met mine, he broke away from the paramedic and ran into my arms.
“Mom!” he sobbed, burying his face in my neck. “I knew you’d find the letter! I hid it in Mrs. Dilmore’s desk during homeroom the morning we left!”
What happened to the husband? Continue reading Part 5 below for the final resolution.
