PART 4: The Locks and the Lockout
At 10:00 AM, my mother and Paige sat at the granite kitchen island, dressed in their finest clothes, eagerly waiting for the military representative they believed was delivering my $400,000 payout.
Instead, two local sheriff’s deputies and a military investigator walked through the front gate, carrying a stack of federal asset seizure notices and an emergency court injunction.
“Margaret and Paige Vance?” the investigator asked, stepping into the living room.
“Yes,” my mother replied, smoothing her dress. “Are you here with the deployment compensation funds?”
“No,” the officer replied, pulling out two pairs of handcuffs. “We are here executing a federal warrant for grand larceny, wire fraud, and forgery involving a deployed active-duty servicemember’s pay.”
Paige screamed as an officer pulled her arms behind her back. “Marcus! Tell them they’re wrong! You said we were getting $400,000!”
“I lied,” I said, stepping into the kitchen alongside my attorney. “There was no $400,000. I just needed to make sure neither of you fled before the bank freeze cleared.”
