Standing on the front porch of the restored estate the following week, I held the brass key in the lock and turned it.

Inside, the house was filled with light, warm wood, and fresh flowers—prepared down to the last detail according to Thomas’s instructions before he checked into the hospital. On the mantle above the fireplace sat a framed photograph of the two of us from our youth, right beside our hospital wedding certificate.

I stepped retired life behind for good, resigning from my nursing job to head The Thomas & Mary Foundation, using his legacy to support aging healthcare workers across the county.
