The air rising from the dark stairwell was thick, damp, and smelled heavily of chemical bleach mixed with rotting wood.
Grace stood beside me, sucking her thumb, watching with wide, innocent eyes as I pulled a flashlight from the kitchen drawer and clicked it on.
“Is she down there, Grace?” I whispered, my hand trembling as the beam of light cut through the blackness.
“She goes down there when Dad gets angry,” Grace said plainly, as if describing a game. “Dad puts her in her room so she can rest.”
I stepped down the concrete stairs, step by step, the chill sinking into my shoes. At the bottom of the flight, the flashlight beam illuminated a makeshift room partitioned off with heavy blue tarps and sealed with industrial tape.
A heavy padlock hung from a steel chain wrapped around a wooden door frame.
My stomach churned as I shone the light higher. Taped to the door was a framed photograph of Daniel’s late wife, Sarah—surrounded by dried flowers, half-burnt candles, and a hand-painted sign in crude child’s handwriting that read: Mommy’s Special Room.
What was inside the sealed room? Continue reading Part 3 below to unearth the truth.
PART 3: The Cold Room
I ran back upstairs, grabbed a claw hammer from Daniel’s garage tool rack, and rushed back down into the gloom.
Driven by sheer adrenaline, I wedged the claw beneath the chain staples and pried with all my strength until the wood splintered and the lock gave way. I shoved the door open.
The room inside was fitted with heavy insulation foam and a standalone industrial freezer unit humming in the corner.
Beside the freezer sat a small folding chair, a stack of children’s picture books, and a cassette player with recorded tapes labeled Sarah’s Voice.
I approached the freezer, my hands shaking so violently I could barely grasp the handle. I pulled the lid open.
Inside, beneath layers of ice packs and sealed plastic containers, was not a body—but hundreds of personal belongings, journals, audio tapes, and Sarah’s actual ashes in a sealed bronze urn, preserved alongside a hidden ledger of financial documents.
I pulled out the leather-bound ledger. Opening it, the dates stretched back four years—to the exact month Sarah allegedly “died in a car accident.”
How did the story of Sarah’s death fall apart? Continue reading Part 4 below for the showdown.
