Part 2: The Unspoken Horror

Part 3: The Confrontation

I shoved the lockbox, the passports, and the blood-stained papers back inside the plastic bag, desperately trying to tuck the sliced mattress fabric back together with my shaking hands. The heavy footsteps moved quickly down the hallway, stopping right outside our bedroom door just as I stood up and backed against the far wall, hiding the box cutter behind my spine. The doorknob turned slowly, and Miguel stepped into the room, his eyes instantly dropping to the ruined mattress sitting in the middle of the floor.

The look on his face shifted from mild irritation to a cold, ruthless stillness that I had never seen in his eyes during our eight years together. He didn’t ask what I was doing, nor did he offer a frantic explanation or express surprise at the horrifying smell filling the room; he simply locked the bedroom door behind him and slid the key into his front pocket. The air between us became suffocatingly heavy as he took a slow, deliberate step toward me, his hands resting casually inside his jacket pockets.

“I told you to leave the bed alone, Clara,” Miguel said, his voice dropping to a low, emotionless whisper that sent a wave of icy terror straight down my spine. “I gave you a simple instruction before I left for the airport, but you just couldn’t help yourself, could you? You always had to dig deeper than you were supposed to, always looking for problems where you didn’t belong.”

“Who are those people in the photographs, Miguel?” I choked out, my voice cracking as tears spilled over my cheeks while I pressed my back harder against the wall. “The passports, the blood on those towels, the missing girl from two blocks over… what have you brought into our home? What have you been doing on those business trips while I sat here waiting for you?”

A faint, bitter smile touched the corner of his lips as he looked at the open cut in the mattress foam, stepping directly between me and the locked bedroom door. “What I do keeps this house paid for, Clara, and it keeps you living comfortably without a single worry in the world,” he replied smoothly, taking another step closer until I could smell the cold metallic scent clinging to his coat. “You were never supposed to find out about any of this, but now you’ve forced my hand, and I can’t let you ruin everything I’ve built.”

He reached into his inner coat pocket and pulled out a small glass vial and a pre-filled syringe, his expression as calm and methodical as if he were performing a routine chore. My breath caught in my throat as I realized he had come back to the house specifically to silence me before his flight, knowing that my obsession with the smell would eventually lead me to the truth inside the bed.
