PART 4: The Confrontation
I drove straight to Bennett’s house, my hands gripping the steering wheel so tightly my knuckles turned white. The gentle, kind man I had spent six months falling in love with had suddenly become a complete stranger.
When he opened his door, he looked hollow, his eyes red and swollen.
“Colleen… please let me explain,” he began, stepping back to let me in.
“You knew, didn’t you?” I demanded, my voice trembling with fury. “You knew Grady was my son!”
“I didn’t!” Bennett swore, holding up his hands. “I swear to God, Colleen, I didn’t know until he walked around the side of that house today! When you mentioned your son Grady, I thought it was just a coincidence… I didn’t connect him to the young contractor from six years ago until I saw his face!”
“He lost everything because of you, Bennett,” I said, tears spilling over my cheeks. “You let a twenty-eight-year-old kid take the blame for your corruption!”
Bennett sank into a chair, burying his face in his hands. “I was in debt… I made terrible choices back then. But the day I met you, I wanted to be a better man. I loved you, Colleen.”
What was the final outcome? Continue reading Part 5 below for the final resolution.
PART 5: The Final Resolution
“If you truly love me, and if you truly want to be a better man,” I said, standing tall in his living room, “you’ll do what should have been done six years ago.”
Two weeks later, Bennett’s attorney contacted Grady’s legal counsel. Bennett voluntarily submitted a signed affidavit admitting to the falsified inspection reports and reached a full, out-of-court financial settlement—repaying Grady every cent of his lost investment along with accrued interest.
While Grady was able to restore his professional reputation and expand his construction company with the settlement funds, I broke off my relationship with Bennett permanently.
He tried to write letters and call, but I couldn’t build a future with a man whose past had caused my child so much pain.
My son’s peace and happiness meant more to me than any second chance at romance—and as I watched Grady thrive in his business, I knew I had made the right choice.
