Standing near the edge of the back fence under the dim patio light was a man in his late fifties, wearing a faded coat, his hands buried deep in his pockets.
As he stepped into the light, my breath caught in my throat. The features were older, weathered, and lined with regret—but I recognized him instantly. It was my ex-husband, David, who had abandoned us twenty years ago when Marissa was just a child.
“David…?” I gasped, taking an unsteady step back toward the kitchen door. “What is he doing here?”
Graham stood beside him, his arms folded, his face completely cold.
“Two months ago, I found out who my father’s former business partner really was,” Graham said, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone. “Your ex-husband didn’t just walk away from you and Marissa twenty years ago. He stole three hundred thousand dollars from my family’s firm to cover his personal debts, leaving my father ruined.”
My heart hammered against my ribs as the realization hit me. Graham hadn’t met my daughter by chance.
What was the deal Graham made with David? Continue reading Part 3 below to uncover the truth.
PART 3: The Secret Contract
“I tracked David down to a small town two hours away,” Graham explained, looking over at the older man, who couldn’t even meet my eyes. “He didn’t have the money to pay back the stolen debt, but he offered me something else.”
David had spent two decades watching our lives from afar, knowing how much Marissa suffered from isolation and low self-esteem because of her birthmark and her father’s disappearance.
“He begged me not to press federal charges against him,” Graham revealed. “In exchange, he promised to give me the ledger records to expose his former accomplices—on one condition. He made me promise to introduce myself to Marissa, date her, and make her feel truly cherished and loved for six months before I brought him here to apologize.”
Tears spilled over my cheeks as I looked at the man who had pretended to love my daughter.
“So every smile, every chair you pulled out… it was all just a business transaction?!” I whispered, my voice trembling with rage.
“I did my part of the deal,” Graham said coldly, pulling a heavy envelope from his jacket. “Now hand over the original property deeds your father left in your house so I can settle David’s debt once and for all.”
How did Marissa react? Continue reading Part 4 below for the confrontation.
