Part 2: Recognizing Real Stroke Warning Signs (BE FAST)
Rather than watching for arbitrary timer-based “signals,” public health organizations emphasize memorizing the BE FAST clinical framework to spot a stroke as soon as it begins.
- B – Balance: Sudden loss of balance, dizziness, or trouble walking smoothly.
- E – Eyes: Sudden vision changes, blurred vision, or loss of sight in one or both eyes.
- F – Face: One side of the face droops or feels numb. Ask the person to smile to check for facial asymmetry.
- A – Arm: Sudden weakness or numbness in one arm or leg. Ask the person to raise both arms to see if one drifts downward.
- S – Speech: Slurred speech, difficulty speaking, or trouble understanding simple sentences. Ask the person to repeat a basic phrase.
- T – Time: Time is critical. Brain cells die every minute a stroke goes untreated. Call emergency medical services (911 or local emergency numbers) immediately if you observe any of these symptoms.
