PART 4: The Showdown
Before I could pull my daughter into my arms, the heavy front door downstairs slammed shut with a terrifying crash.
Heavy footsteps rushed up the wooden staircase. Seconds later, the bedroom door burst open, revealing Kang Jun accompanied by two sharp-suited men.
“I saw the taxi outside,” Kang Jun spat, his eyes darting from me to the opened boxes of money. “I told you, Mary Lou—no unannounced guests. Especially not your mother.”
“She didn’t know anything!” Mary Lou shouted, stepping boldly in front of me. “She just bought a ticket! Take the money, take the accounts—just let her leave!”
Kang Jun scoffed, pulling a thick envelope from his inner jacket pocket. “Nobody leaves. Your mother just made herself a liability.”
“I don’t think so,” I said, stepping out from behind my daughter, my voice steady despite the fear clutching my chest. “Because before I came up these stairs, I sent my location and pictures of these money boxes to the U.S. Embassy in Seoul.”
