“What are you doing here, Ashley?” I snarled, stepping between her attorneys and Emily, who pulled the twins tighter against her chest.
Ashley didn’t look flustered. She smoothed her designer coat, her smile sharp and predatory.
“I’m here to protect my investment, Michael,” Ashley said smoothly, waving her lawyer forward. “Did you really think I didn’t have a backup plan? Look at your signed prenuptial agreement and business trust documents.”
Her attorney handed me a thick legal folder.
“Eleven months ago,” Ashley explained, “when you signed over voting control of Carter Construction to secure our corporate merger loans, you signed an irrevocability clause. If you break our engagement or attempt to alter the trust beneficiaries without my consent, control of your company automatically transfers to my family’s holding firm. PART 3: Stripped of Everything
I didn’t even read the rest of the contract. I looked Ashley dead in the eye, took the prenuptial agreement, and tore it straight down the middle.
“Keep the company,” I said, my voice steady for the first time in a year. “Keep the house, the cars, and every dollar in those accounts.”
Ashley’s smile vanished, replaced by a look of sheer disbelief. “Michael, you’re bluffing! You’ll be ruined! You won’t have a cent to support them!”
“I built that company from scratch once,” I replied, turning my back on her completely. “I can build something else. But I will never choose money over my family again.”
I took Emily’s worn canvas bag in one hand, reached out, and gently took one of my crying sons into my arms for the very first time. His tiny hand reached up and clutched my shirt, his warm breath resting against my neck.
As Ashley screamed threats behind us, Emily and I walked away from the parking lot, leaving her standing alone beside her lawyers.
How did we rebuild from nothing? Continue reading Part 4 below for the showdown.
