Part 4: The Final Reckoning
My mother drifted down the stairs moments later, wearing a sweeping floral gown and clutching a list of expensive home contractors she intended to hire for the second-floor renovation. Her triumphant smile melted into sheer terror when she saw Paige staring at her phone screen in total disbelief, tears of rage and confusion streaming down her heavily made-up cheeks.
“Mom! Something’s wrong with the bank!” Paige shrieked, her voice cracking as she repeatedly swiped across the glass. “All the credit cards are declined! The checking accounts say zero balance! It says our assets are locked by a federal court order!”
My mother turned white as a sheet, her gaze darting frantically from her daughter’s phone straight to where I stood calmly against the kitchen counter. “What did you do?” she gasped, her voice trembling as she clutched her gold necklace. “Marcus, what did you do to our money? You promised us four hundred thousand dollars!”
“I never had four hundred thousand dollars,” I said quietly, taking a slow step toward her as the heavy sound of approaching sirens began to echo down the quiet suburban street outside. “I said that to see how far your disgusting greed would go while my wife was bleeding out in a concrete storage room beneath your feet.”
The heavy front doors burst open, and four armed military police officers stepped into the foyer alongside a pair of state investigators and a waiting medical transport team. Before my mother or sister could utter another lie, the lead investigator held up the forged medical release papers and the federal arrest warrants for grand larceny, identity theft, and criminal endangerment.
Gwen was gently helped out of the storage room by two compassionate paramedics, wrapped in a soft warm blanket as they prepared to transfer her directly to the top oncology unit at the university medical center under full military coverage. As my mother and sister were handcuffed and led out toward the waiting police cruisers in full view of the entire neighborhood, my mother turned to scream at me, begging for mercy.
I didn’t say a single word to her as the squad car doors slammed shut. I simply turned my back on them forever, took my wife’s small, fragile hand in mine, and walked toward the ambulance to begin the long journey of saving the only person who had ever truly loved me.
