The Sunday family dinner had been going smoothly until Clara’s mother-in-law spotted the small metal tool resting on the kitchen counter.
Clara had merely picked up the ordinary nail clipper to fix a snagged fingernail before dessert.
Instead of letting her clip in peace, Brenda burst into a sudden, uncontrollable fit of laughter that made everyone at the table turn around.

Clara felt her cheeks burn bright red as she held the silver clipper suspended in mid-air like a piece of incriminating evidence.

The entire dining room fell into an abrupt, stunned silence as other family members leaned in closer to inspect the tiny aperture.
Clara flipped the metal device over in her palm, staring blankly at the circular opening near the base that she had ignored her entire life.
She had always assumed it was just a cheap manufacturing defect or a decorative loop meant for a forgotten keychain ring.
Brenda wiped a tear from her eye, shaking her head as if looking at a hopelessly clueless child.
“That little circle holds a secret that completely changes how every household tool was engineered over a century ago,” Brenda teased mischievously.
Clara’s heart did a strange little flip of curiosity mingled with absolute embarrassment.

Brenda crossed her arms and leaned back, smiling like a cat that had just cornered the canary.
